Miandad wants competent professional people to manage PCB affairs

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Former Pakistan Test captain Javed Miandad has said that the current set up of the PCB was an utter failure and needed to be replaced with “competent and professional people” who could bring back Pakistan cricket to its rightful place.Pakistan needed a breath of fresh air to revive their cricketing fortunes, he added.

“The PCB has failed completely in the past few years. Today, teams are refusing to visit Pakistan and nobody takes us seriously in the cricket. These are very bad times for Pakistan cricket,” The News quoted Miandad as saying.

He added that ‘incompetent and unprofessional’ PCB officials had reduced Pakistan to the status of a “mere pushover” in the international cricket community.

The PCB is responsible for the sorry plight of Pakistan cricket, he said and added “till 1990s, Pakistan was considered to be a big power in world cricket. It was ranked up on the cricket pyramid alongside top cricket-playing nations like Australia, England and India. But now Pakistan is treated as a minor team like Kenya or Zimbabwe.”

He pointed out that it is because of a weak PCB that teams like Australia can easily pick and choose about which country to tour. “The Australians can easily skip tours of Pakistan on the pretext of terrorism but are readily available to go to India just days after deadly bombings taking place there. Had the PCB been a strong and competent body, such a thing would never be allowed,” Miandad claimed.

Rejecting the impression that he was lobbying for the post of PCB chairman, Miandad said: “Pakistan cricket has already given me a lot,” he said. “It has given me respect, fame and wealth and I don’t need anything more. I just want to help Pakistan cricket get back on its feet.”

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Literate individuals are happier, more likely to be in a lasting relationship and living in their own home, suggests a new study. What’s more, they’re to be better paid, drink and smoke less, the study suggested.

According to the study by the National Literacy Trust, almost a quarter of men - 22 per cent - who struggle with reading still live with their parents, compared with just nine per cent of those with good literacy, reports Telegraph.

The research also showed that by the age of 34, 68 per cent of men and 70 per cent of women with good literacy skills are co-habiting or married as compared to 52 per cent of men and 60 per cent of women who find it difficult.

Just half of people who struggle with books claim to be “satisfied with life”, compared with 78 per cent of those who can read well.

Also, literate people are more likely to get a handsome salary and are less likely to smoke.

Blogger arrested over leak of Guns N’ Roses songs

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

A blogger suspected of streaming songs from the unreleased Guns N’ Roses album “Chinese Democracy” on his Web site was arrested Wednesday and appeared in court, where his bail was set at $10,000.

FBI agents arrested 27-year-old Kevin Cogill on Wednesday morning on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws. Cogill appeared in court in the afternoon wearing a T-shirt; his girlfriend sat court and afterward said, “Rally the troops,” but declined further comment.

Federal authorities say Cogill posted nine unreleased Guns N’ Roses songs on his Web site in June. The songs were later removed.

In later posts, Cogill wrote that the FBI had questioned him and asked his readers if any of them knew a good attorney. He was represented Wednesday by a federal public defender.

According to an arrest affidavit, Cogill admitted to agents that he posted the songs on his Web site. Prosecutors said Wednesday the leak could result in a “significant” financial loss for the band.

Cogill will not face any special Internet restrictions, but was ordered to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 17.

“Guns N’ Roses representatives have been made aware of the arrest and are leaving the matter to the authorities,” said Larry Solters, the band’s spokesman.

“Chinese Democracy” is a much anticipated — and repeatedly delayed — new album by Guns N’ Roses that is more than 10 years in the making. At least one of the album’s songs could be heard legally: The band wrote on its Web site in July that its track, “Shackler’s Revenge” will be featured on the video game Rock Band 2, slated for release in September.

Rani-Salman’s debate on SRK to conclude ‘Dus Ka Dum’

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Salman Khan’s big bucks show ‘Dus Ka Dum’ will surely conclude with fireworks as the actor gave his piece of mind to bong babe Rani Mukerji, who was making futile attempts to bring the ongoing war between the two of her good friends, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman to a close.

Salman is in no mood for reconciliation and that we all know. But looks like, Rani Mukerji was not aware of the actor’s undying hatred for King Khan as she asked the actor to forgive, forget and move on.

To her shock, her friendly advice saw Sallu going red. And pat, the macho actor ended up giving some serious gyaan on friendship to Rani.

Story goes like this Salman asked Rani:

“What percentage of Indians think two actors can be good friends?”

Dancing on the chance, Rani asked Salman about his fight with Shah Rukh. To which Salman stated that though he was a good friend with SRK at one point, but now he does not wish to be associated with King Khan.

When Rani expressed her displeasure to Sallu, he ended up giving her a lecture on the importance of friendship in his life.

Hmm.. now that will be some finale to watch.

Bronze Fonz now an ‘Ayyyy’-list celeb in Milwaukee

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

His hair will always be in place, he doesn’t mind if you touch the leather and he’s far too heavy to jump the shark.

Thought Arthur Fonzarelli couldn’t get any cooler? Meet the bronze Fonz.

Dozens of people lined the Milwaukee River on Tuesday to cheer the unveiling of a statue of the “Happy Days” character, including Henry Winkler himself. The man who was cast as the Fonz — then cast in bronze — pretended to comb the statue’s hair and put his arm around the smiling, life-size likeness, which is giving two thumbs up.

“To see it in real life and that it exists it’s just, it’s just unbelievable. It really is,” Winkler told the invite-only crowd and others gathered nearby trying to hear.

Milwaukee joins at least six other cities around the nation that have erected statues of classic television or movie characters.

Though no scenes were filmed here, “Happy Days” took place in Milwaukee during its TV run from 1974 to 1984. Most of the cast was on hand Tuesday, along with the show’s creator, director and producer Garry Marshall, and actors Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams from the spin-off “Laverne & Shirley.”

Ron Howard, who played Richie Cunningham, was filming a movie and wasn’t able to make it. Winkler’s two sons, daughter and wife were also in the audience.

Garry Marshall was playful at the podium, making the crowd laugh.

“Hi, I’m Penny’s brother,” he said, referring to his well-known sister, actress-director Penny Marshall.

The show’s executive producer, Thomas L. Miller, talked him out of basing the show in the Bronx, where the Marshalls grew up, Marshall said. Miller was born in Milwaukee.

“To think back and I made up a character, you know, and just made it up but suddenly a man came named Henry Winkler, and he made this character real.”

He then gave Winkler a hug.

The sculptor, Gerald Sawyer, put the initials of Winkler and his wife in the veins in the hands, “like the David in Italy,” Winkler said.

Two booster groups, VISIT Milwaukee and Spirit Milwaukee, helped raise funds for the statue. The cable network TV Land also contributed.

TV Land fully sponsored six other statues, but since ended the program. Those are Mary Tyler Moore in Minneapolis; Bob Newhart in Chicago; Elvis Presley in Honolulu; Ralph Kramden in New York; Samantha from “Bewitched” in Salem, Mass.; and Andy Griffith in Raleigh, N.C.

Elvis+Priscilla+Barbienew must-have item for fans

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

The marriage didn’t last all that long, but for the Elvis Presley faithful, the wedding day is special still. And now, Elvis fans have the official, Graceland-approved Elvis and Priscilla wedding dolls to remind them of that magical time.

“This is just another way he’s making history, and we want to be part of it,” said Angel Durham, who waited all night outside a Graceland souvenir shop to be the first to hand over $65 for a boxed set of the dolls, the newest additions to Mattel’s Barbie series.

Durham, 38, of Whitney, Texas, was at the front of about 150 Elvis fans lined up to witness the official unveiling of the dolls, staged as part of Graceland’s annual weeklong fan pilgrimage to mark the anniversary of Presley’s death on Aug. 16, 1977.

Brenda Moore of Bentonville, Ark., invested less time in getting her dolls but paid out a lot more money for a one-and-only set of dolls signed by Priscilla Presley.

Moore, 59, offered the high bid of $6,800 when the autographed box set was auctioned to the fans as a fundraiser for Presley Place, an apartment building in Memphis for homeless families.

“I was so nervous, I don’t know if I saw it really well, but I think it’s a good likeness,” Moore said. “They showed them yesterday and I looked at them online. I was planning to buy them, but never dreamed we would do this.”

Moore, a claims manager at Wal-Mart’s corporate headquarters, said she and husband Mitchell believe the money is for a good cause.

“Presley Place, where the money will go, we contribute to them every year,” she said. “Also, I want that on display in my living room in a curio cabinet.”

The dolls, with faces painted to look like Presley and his bride, were designed from photos of the wedding. The groom sports a black paisley tuxedo while the bride wears a white beaded gown and rhinestone tiara.

The couple married in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967, but had split up by early 1972. They formally separated in July 1972 and were divorced in October 1973.

Durham said she got in place Monday night to await her shot at one of the 190 boxed sets Graceland was offering with special unveiling-day stamps. The 40,000 other sets sent to retailers later this year won’t have those stamps.

Fans gathered for the unveiling were treated to slices of wedding cake and orange juice served in champagne glasses.

Mattel also issued an Elvis and Barbie doll set in the late 1990s.
